Many scientific techniques have been developed such as somatic cell nucleotide transfer to create human embryos from which embryonic stem cells are obtained for various medical uses. The obtained stem cells have the ability to divide and differentiate into any types of human cells, thus being extremely useful to replace damaged tissues or even in some particular cases organs. However there are of course some ethical issues to adress whilst looking at therapeutic cloning.
For therapeutic cloning
1) These stem cells can be used to save millions of lives and reduce the suffering of millions.
2)If some see the embryo as life already, stem cells may be removed from an embryo that would have died anyway.
3)For those that believe the embryos will feel pain, this is not true as at such an early age these embryos have to nerve cells and therefore do not feel pain.
Against therapeutic cloning:
1) A human embryo is a potential being, therefore some believe that this is in a way the murder of a potential life.
2)For the sake of science, more embryos may have to be produced than are needed, so some are killed.
3)There is a greater chance of embryonic stem cells developing into tumour cells.
To conclude there are many arguments pro and con cloning however having personally seen on others the life saving changes that these stem cells can bring, I do believe it should be allowed but only in a controlled manner. All countries have different laws and this an interesting chart showing the different laws of therapeutic cloning:
